肺炎球菌は、人間の鼻やのどにいる身近な菌で、身体の抵抗力が落ちてくると、肺炎・髄膜炎・中耳炎などを引き起こします。ヒブと同様に細菌性髄膜炎の原因となり、生後3か月～5歳（特に1歳未満）の乳幼児がかかりやすいので、注意が必要です。
